AKUSE, E/R- Residents of Akuse in the Lower Manya Krobo Municipality of the Eastern Region have called on the government and their Member of Parliament, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, to urgently address the poor state of roads in the area.
According to the residents, the deteriorating road network is taking a heavy toll on farming activities, transportation, and the local economy.
Speaking to the media, some residents lamented that farmers are losing income because transport operators are reluctant to travel to Akuse, Asutuare, and Osuwem due to the deplorable condition of the roads.
“Our farmers are losing income because many transport operators refuse to come to Akuse, Asutuare, and Osuwem to transport produce. We are making a peaceful appeal to Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, MP for Lower Manya Krobo, to intervene and ensure the completion of these roads,” a resident stated.
Akuse, a major farming and fishing community with a population of more than 10,000 residents, is known for its significant contribution to agricultural and fish production in the region. Residents say the poor road network is undermining economic activities and affecting livelihoods.
Many residents expressed disappointment over what they described as years of inadequate development, despite the community’s strong political support for the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and its parliamentary representative.
They noted that they had expected greater advocacy for development projects following the appointment of their MP as Deputy Minister for Interior.
Residents also highlighted what they perceive as a lack of visible efforts to lobby for key infrastructure projects, including roads, schools, drainage systems, employment opportunities, and healthcare facilities.
“We expected our MP to consistently push for better roads, jobs, schools, drainage systems, and improved healthcare facilities. Unfortunately, Akuse has not received the level of representation and development attention it deserves over the years,” another resident remarked.
The residents further argued that despite being one of the strongest support bases for both the MP and the ruling party, Akuse continues to face significant infrastructure challenges.
“We want leadership that speaks for the people, pushes for development, and delivers results. Akuse has consistently given overwhelming support at the polls, yet many residents cannot point to any major development project that has directly benefited the community,” a resident added.
The residents are therefore appealing to the government and relevant authorities to prioritize the rehabilitation and completion of roads in the area, stressing that improved infrastructure is critical to boosting economic activities and enhancing the quality of life for residents.
They maintain that a community that has contributed significantly to the political success of its leaders deserves greater attention, commitment, and visible development.
