NYAMEKROM, E/R- The Chief of Nyamekrom in the New Juaben Traditional Area of the Eastern Region, Nana Kwame Nnuro, has expressed concern over rising insecurity in the community, attributing it partly to the rapid pace of development being witnessed in the area.
He said the situation has made the construction of a police station necessary to provide 24-hour security for residents and businesses in Nyamekrom and surrounding communities.
Speaking to the media after a sod-cutting ceremony for the community-led police station project, Nana Kwame Nnuro said the security situation in the area had, for some time, been a source of concern to residents and traditional authorities.
He commended the Member of Parliament and the Municipal Chief Executive for their support towards ensuring the successful completion of the project.
According to him, the establishment of the police station will not only improve security but also boost development in the area, as investors would be reluctant to invest or operate in communities where adequate security is lacking.
The Chief therefore urged residents to volunteer relevant information to the police to assist them in preventing and fighting crime.
He also disclosed plans to establish smaller police posts in some surrounding communities to accommodate personnel and serve as first points of contact for residents who may require police assistance.
The Koforidua Divisional Commander, ACP Alex Asamoah Frimpong, assured residents that the police would respond whenever called upon by citizens, stressing that it is their responsibility to attend to security concerns.
He expressed optimism that, when completed, the facility would become a vibrant police station that would meet the security needs of the community.
ACP Asamoah Frimpong further assured residents that the police would operate within the confines of the law in carrying out their duties.
Meanwhile, the Municipal Chief Executive for New Juaben South, Ransford Owusu Boakye, has commended the chiefs and people of Nyamekrom for initiating the project to improve security in the area.
Touching on the recent controversy surrounding the erection of a telecommunication mast at the Koforidua Lorry Terminal, the MCE dismissed claims that the facility poses health risks to residents.
He explained that the mast is intended to improve internet connectivity within Koforidua and its surrounding areas, a development he said would also enhance business activities.
Mr. Owusu Boakye further disclosed that the facility would support the National Security in its surveillance operations in the region, thereby contributing to efforts to improve security.
