AKWADUM KYEBI, E/R- The Chief of Akwadum Kyebi in the Akyem Abuakwa Traditional Area, Barima Pobi Asumani III, has expressed deep concern over the persistent rise in illegal mining (galamsey), particularly in river bodies, describing greed and selfishness as the major drivers of the destructive practice.
Speaking to the media on the sidelines of the installation of the town’s new Kyidomhene, the Chief said the relentless pursuit of personal wealth has led to the widespread destruction of rivers and other vital water sources.
According to him, many community members engage in illegal mining out of greed, despite knowing the long-term environmental consequences. He questioned why anyone would choose to mine in rivers that had been protected by their forefathers for the benefit of future generations.
Barima Pobi Asumani III stressed that although chiefs and even the President are often blamed for the environmental devastation caused by galamsey, the responsibility largely lies with individuals who continue to engage in the illegal activity.
He called for a change in attitude towards environmental protection, noting that preserving water bodies and forests is essential to reducing floods and other environmental disasters affecting the country.
Meanwhile, the newly installed Kyidomhene, Baffour Darkwa Bosompem I, expressed concern over what he described as the growing lack of respect among some young people for their elders.
He urged the youth to emulate the discipline and humility demonstrated by the Chief and the traditional leadership, while also advising them to stay away from drug abuse. He further encouraged young women to exercise self-discipline and make responsible life choices.
