KYEBI, E/R- The Okyenhene, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin, has described the recent floods in Accra as a stark warning that Ghana must change its attitude towards environmental protection.
Speaking at the 2026 Kyebi Ohum Festival, held under the theme “Rejuvenating Our Customs for Sustainability and Nature’s Connection,” the Okyenhene said while inadequate urban planning and disaster prevention measures contribute to flooding, human activities remain the greatest threat to the environment.
He cited indiscriminate disposal of waste into gutters, rivers and other unauthorized places, the construction of buildings on waterways, and the failure to keep drainage systems clear as major causes of the country’s recurring floods.
According to him, the recent flooding in Accra should serve as a wake-up call for all Ghanaians to adopt responsible environmental practices and reconnect with nature.
The Okyenhene also expressed concern over the growing incidence of drug and substance abuse among the youth, describing it as a serious national challenge that requires urgent action.
He called for the strict enforcement of laws regulating the sale of alcohol and tobacco products, urging the Ghana Police Service and Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) to crack down on drinking spots and retailers that sell alcohol to persons below the age of 18.
On chieftaincy matters, Osagyefo Amoatia Ofori Panin advised government and public officials to refrain from interfering in chieftaincy affairs, stressing that such actions undermine the autonomy and integrity of the chieftaincy institution.
Representing the government, Chief of Staff Julius Debrah commended the Okyenhene for his visionary and courageous leadership, assuring him of the government’s continued support.
Mr. Debrah reiterated the government’s commitment to transforming the agricultural sector and appealed to the Okyenhene to work with traditional authorities to make more land available for agricultural production to boost food security and economic growth.
The 2026 Kyebi Ohum Festival attracted a large gathering of traditional leaders, government officials and political figures from both the National Democratic Congress (NDC) and the New Patriotic Party (NPP), underscoring the festival’s significance as a platform for promoting culture, national unity and sustainable development.
