A stakeholders’ dialogue on child protection has been held in Suhum in the Eastern Region to discuss practical solutions for protecting children from abuse, exploitation, and trafficking through active leadership participation.
The dialogue brought together traditional leaders, clergy members, assembly members, and other stakeholders to deliberate on effective strategies for safeguarding children from abuse and other forms of inhumane treatment.
Speaking at the event, the Member of Parliament for the Suhum Constituency and a member of Parliament’s Human Rights Committee, Frank Asiedu Bekoe, noted that countries that achieve significant development are those that prioritize the protection and welfare of children. He emphasized that the nation’s future development depends largely on how well its children are treated and protected.
Mr. Asiedu Bekoe highlighted challenges facing the constituency, including substance abuse, child abuse, teenage pregnancy, and child trafficking. According to him, these concerns informed the organization of the dialogue and the establishment of Community Child Protection Committees aimed at addressing the issues.
The Survivor Leadership Specialist at the International Justice Mission (IJM), Love Kyeremah-Darko, said the organization remains committed to protecting vulnerable members of society from violence through strategic partnerships with local authorities. She explained that IJM works to combat human trafficking, online sexual exploitation of children, violence against women and children, and the abuse of police power.
She further indicated that the organization is collaborating with government agencies to tackle child labour and trafficking, particularly within the agricultural sector.
Ms. Kyeremah-Darko stressed that every child deserves to grow up in a safe and protective environment, free from violence and exploitation. However, she noted that child abuse and trafficking continue to affect many families within communities. She emphasized that addressing these challenges requires not only laws but also strong systems, informed leadership, and collective community action.
