The youth in Kwamoso are absolutely furious right now, and they are pointing fingers straight at some big names over what they say is blatant, daylight robbery of a state asset.
Basically, there’s a massive, government-owned teak plantation up in the Akuapem North area. But according to the local youth group, the place is being stripped bare by illegal loggers. And they aren’t hiding behind masks either; the youth are openly accusing some local NDC constituency executives of teaming up with a Lebanese businessman to cut down the teak trees and sell them off for a quick personal payday.
Speaking to the press at Kwamoso, the youth didn’t hold back. They said the chainsaws have been running non-stop for months, trucks are moving out loaded with timber, and a huge chunk of the plantation is already gone.
What’s really driving the anger here isn’t just the environmental damage—though that’s bad enough. It’s the sheer unfairness of it. Teak is incredibly valuable. The youth are pointing out that this plantation belongs to the state, meaning it belongs to the community. They had plans for that resource. They wanted the proceeds from any legal, future harvest to go into actual community development, like finally extending electricity to the parts of Kwamoso that are still sitting in the dark. Instead, they’re watching a few well-connected people pocket the cash.
The group is now calling on the Forestry Commission and the police to move in fast before the entire forest is wiped out. They want a full investigation into the NDC executives and the businessman involved.
But they also dropped a warning: if the authorities drag their feet and keep playing looking-the-other-way games, the youth themselves are ready to step in and physically block anyone trying to touch those trees.
