KWAHU OBO, EASTERN REGION — The Eastern Regional Director of Education, Madam Ivy Owusu, has urged parents to take a more active role in monitoring their children and helping to curb drug abuse among students.
According to her, the increasing use of drugs and other harmful substances among schoolchildren is contributing significantly to indiscipline, poor academic performance and other behavioural challenges in schools.
Madam Owusu made the call at Kwahu Obo during the commissioning of a renovated six-unit classroom block for the Kwahu Ridge Senior High Technical School.
The facility was renovated by Obo Vision, an association made up of natives and residents of Kwahu Obo, as part of efforts to support the development of education in the community.
The project was undertaken in response to the growing student population of the school and the urgent need for additional and improved classroom facilities to provide students with a more conducive environment for teaching and learning.
Speaking at the commissioning ceremony, Madam Owusu expressed concern about the growing cases of drug abuse among young people and stressed the need for stronger collaboration between parents, teachers, school authorities and the wider community to address the problem.
She noted that parents have a crucial responsibility to understand the behaviour of their children, monitor their activities and intervene early whenever they notice signs of substance abuse or other negative influences.
«“Parents must pay close attention to their children and help fight drug abuse, which is negatively affecting discipline and academic performance in our schools,” she said.»
She encouraged parents not to leave the responsibility of raising and disciplining their children entirely to teachers, stressing that effective parental guidance at home is essential to complement efforts by schools.
Madam Owusu also commended Obo Vision for investing in the school and urged other individuals, groups and organisations to support educational institutions in their communities.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Akyempemhene of Kwahu Obo, Barima Adofo Kissi, said the increasing enrolment at Kwahu Ridge Senior High Technical School was a major motivation for Obo Vision to intervene.
He explained that the association recognised the pressure the growing student population was placing on the school’s existing infrastructure and therefore decided to contribute towards improving the learning environment.
He expressed the hope that the renovated classroom block would help ease the pressure on existing facilities and create a better atmosphere for both students and teachers.
Barima Adofo Kissi further called on students to remain disciplined, respect their parents and teachers, and take their studies seriously.

He urged the students to make good use of the facility and maintain it properly so that it could serve them and future generations.
The commissioning of the renovated classroom block forms part of Obo Vision’s broader commitment to supporting educational development and improving opportunities for young people within Kwahu Obo.
The initiative also highlights the important role community-based organisations and local stakeholders can play in complementing government efforts to provide quality educational infrastructure and improve learning outcomes.
