KYEKYEWERE CHIEF RAISES ALARM OVER ALLEGED LAND GUARDS INVASION AND INSECURITY.

KYEKYEWERE, E/R. — The Chief of Kyekyewere in the Ayensuano District of the Eastern Region, Okunini Kwame Gyebi Ababio, has raised alarm over what he describes as a deteriorating security situation in the community, following the alleged activities of land guards and other individuals accused of terrorizing residents and destroying farms and properties.

According to the Chief, Kyekyewere, which was once known for its peace and tranquility, is increasingly becoming unsafe as alleged land guards continue to operate in the area, creating fear and anxiety among residents.

Speaking at a press conference, Okunini Kwame Gyebi Ababio alleged that the land guards were brought into the community by some estate developers and have been involved in the alleged encroachment on farmlands, destruction of crops and properties, and intimidation of residents.

He said the situation has become a major concern for traditional authorities and residents, particularly as some of the alleged incidents are taking place in areas where residents have depended on farming for their livelihoods.

The Chief alleged that some residents have had their farms and properties destroyed as a result of disputes over land, while others have reportedly been subjected to threats and harassment.

He said the alleged activities of the land guards have not only affected the livelihoods of farmers but have also created an atmosphere of fear within the community.

Okunini Ababio expressed concern that if the situation is not addressed promptly, it could escalate and threaten the peace and stability that the community has enjoyed over the years.

The Chief also made allegations against some police officers, claiming that officers who are expected to protect residents are allegedly involved in activities connected to the land disputes.

He called for an independent and thorough investigation into the allegations to establish the facts and ensure that anyone found to have broken the law is held accountable.

The Chief stressed that no individual, group or institution should be allowed to operate above the law, regardless of their influence or connections.

Okunini Kwame Gyebi Ababio is appealing to the government, the Ghana Police Service and other relevant security agencies to urgently intervene in the situation.

He wants the authorities to take steps to restore calm, protect residents and prevent further destruction of farms and properties.

He also called for a thorough investigation into the alleged activities of the land guards and other individuals operating in the community.

The Chief warned that continued inaction could have serious consequences for the community.

He said if the alleged harassment and intimidation persist and residents continue to feel unprotected, they may be left with no option but to defend themselves.

The Chief, however, urged the authorities to act before the situation reaches that stage, stressing the need for lawful intervention to prevent tensions from escalating.

Some residents who claim to have suffered from the alleged activities of the land guards also shared their experiences with Peace News.

The victims recounted alleged incidents of intimidation, harassment and destruction of property, and appealed to the relevant authorities to intervene.

The allegations made by the Chief and the affected residents require investigation by the appropriate authorities to establish the facts and determine whether any individuals or institutions have breached the law.

Residents are now calling for urgent measures to restore security and protect lives, farms and properties in Kyekyewere.

The community hopes that the intervention of the government and security agencies will help resolve the land-related tensions and prevent further escalation.
